- Trippin’ Apes Tribe has broken previous Solana records on OpenSea, 2x Okay Bears 24H volume.
- Not so fast, the bears still reign supreme on OpenSea.
Trippin’ Ape Tribe (TAT), a Solana-based non-fungible token (NFT) project that features colorful apes with psychedelic traits, broke Okay Bear‘s previous record in Opensea to become the top-selling collection in a 24-hours period as of May 25; but there is a catch.
Solana’s Top Newcomer: Trippin’ Apes or Okay Bears?
Trippin’ Apes Tribe has hit 308K SOL volume this May 25 at 3:20 pm UTC, roughly 24 hours after minting began, according to OpenSea’s market-wide 24h sales tracker, which aggregates data from multiple marketplaces. In this regard, TAT has nearly doubled Okay Bears’ 196K volume last April 26, making it the second Solana project to break records on OpenSea, which happened in less than two months of being integrated into the marketplace.
Ironically, the market condition during the time of Okay Bears’ launch was less bearish than today, with SOL hovering around $98. This means that the collection’s 24h volume was actually $19.2 million. While today, SOL is worth around $48, which means that Trippin Apes’ 24h volume adds up to $14.8 million, which is nearly $5 million short of Okay Bears’.
As of today, Okay Bears still holds the record for the highest trading volume in 24h among Solana NFTs in dollar value. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the bears officially won. After all, both projects are still very early and have a lot to prove to the space. Crypto maxis may also argue that 1 SOL = 1 SOL and that the dollar value should not be the right metric.
Well, it’s all subjective, isn’t it?
Nevertheless, TAT has scored a victory that very few projects ever achieve, let alone a day after launch.
What Made Trippin’ Apes Tribe So Hyped?
The success of the collection may be attributed to what co-founder Lysergic calls “stupid but effective marketing,” which they had mapped out early on.
The team utilizes rather unconventional methods to bring awareness to the project. For example, it previously set up a truck with a billboard that says “NFTs ARE STUPID” with a QR code that linked to TAT’s Twitter page to drive up and down the Las Vegas Strip.
The team has created rich lore that keeps the community engaged, while the announcements and other team messages are consistently on-brand. Whitelisted individuals were called Trial Subjects and were able to participate in the Initiation Ceremony (mint) on Magic Eden. Whenever Chorles’s disciples (mods or members of the TAT team) make announcements on Discord or Twitter, they usually employ either metaphorical or cryptic elements in their message.
“The idea is to keep people thinking about the project. Guessing what we’ll do next,” says Lysergic in the interview with Magic Eden.
