IFI CLAIMS, a Digital Science company focused on patent data, worked with IALE Tecnología to release a briefing report on companies laying the patent groundwork for the metaverse on the 20th of July. The report reveals Microsoft as the leading company to stake the biggest claim, followed by many others.
The data shows that in five years, patent applications for metaverse-related innovations increased to more than 2,000. Out of the observed companies, Microsoft had the most extensive attempt to dominate in this aspect.
Microsoft as the Leading Company in the Metaverse
Microsoft has constantly developed its numerous inventions over the years, making it one of the hottest metaverse stocks. As the world continues to move into the metaverse, its focus has become more specific: artificial intelligence (AI) around human memory, virtual assistants in augmented reality (AR), holographic augmentation, and others. It also acquired Activision Blizzard and created its own blockchain.
Microsoft did not keep its strategy a secret but proudly announced its plans revolving around the metaverse. Its number of patents reached 158, making it the most significant contributor out of the twelve analyzed companies.
Annual Patent Activity of Companies
IFI CLAIMS and IALE Tecnologia studied the yearly patent activities of ten companies to determine which has the greatest possibility to continue investing in the metaverse. The data indicates that Microsoft consistently applied for patents from 2018 to 2021. Its patents decreased in the last two consecutive years, but its average is still on the highest rank among other companies.
Samsung Electronics only started with 12 patents in 2018, but it constantly grew in the next three years. On the other hand, enterprise AR platform Magic Leap showed a growing interest in the metaverse by increasing its number of patents yearly.
