ChatGPT continues to make headlines daily, highlighting its vast capabilities and potential for AI. Despite its impressive abilities, we have only scratched the surface of what AI can achieve.
In this article, we will look at ChatGPT’s newest role in society and how AIs could evolve in the future, a critical fate that depends entirely on humans’ hands.
ChatGPT, You’re Hired!
The media industry is on the cusp of a technological revolution with the integration of AI in the workplace. In a recent move, BuzzFeed, the American news and media company, announced that ChatGPT would become its newest “employee” to enhance the website’s content personalization.
BuzzFeed’s CEO and cofounder Jonah Peretti, has also downplayed concerns that the integration of artificial intelligence could lead to massive job loss. He highlighted that collaboration between humans and AIs remains critical for any company’s success.

The media outlet plans to roll out its AI-generated content this coming February, and a possible sneak peek of these materials this month. While this may not be a full-scale implementation, the company is eager to test the waters and gauge its worldwide audience’s reaction to AI-written content.
In his statement, Peretti emphasized that ChatGPT would not be implemented in BuzzFeed’s newsroom anytime soon. The newsroom heavily relies on human judgment, fact-checking, a moral compass, and unbiased reportings, which are qualities that publicly available AIs still struggle to achieve. Instead, the tool will have its initial pilot test on selected content, including BuzzFeed’s quizzes.
Moreover, while the smart chatbot can generate compelling outputs, it has limitations, and human assistance is crucial to ensure that it will always produce error-free outputs.
Despite the tech’s limitations, the BuzzFeed CEO remains optimistic about the future of AI, especially ChatGPT. He envisions a future where the media industry not only uses AI as a curation tool but as a full-fledged content creator.
Share Price Boost
Even before releasing its first batch of AI-generated content, it appears that BuzzFeed is already gaining some positive results. This was reflected in the company’s stock market performance, as its share price has soared by over 100% following the public announcement of its ChatGPT adoption.
This is a remarkable development for the company, struggling with declining advertising rates and stock market challenges. In fact, its share price has dropped by 40% since its December 2021 initial public offering (IPO). While it remains to be seen whether this positive trend will continue in the coming weeks, this is certainly a promising sign for the veteran media company.
Imperfections of Artificial Intelligence
BuzzFeed’s foray into automated content creation is nothing new; in fact, The Associated Press has been doing this for nearly a decade. Google also recently gave the green light on AI-generated content.
However, these older systems are often inflexible and have limitations that may prevent them from keeping pace with the latest advancements in AI technology. Meanwhile, new AI systems may have larger capacities to process content, but this very feature exposes them to making mistakes like plagiarism, a cardinal sin in the media industry.

Moreover, artificial intelligence’s imperfections were further highlighted when tech news website CNET was caught using AI-generated content without openly disclosing it to its readers.
The more concerning part is that AI was used in financial advice articles, which could have been riddled with multiple errors. As a result, CNET immediately suspended the use of AI tools following the incident.
Personalizing Content for Readers
With its vast data processing capabilities, rapid self-learning feature, and unparalleled language fluency, AI can potentially redefine the future of publishing.
Imagine a publisher wanting to release a romantic comedy novel for its readers. In the past, this would have meant that all buyers would receive the exact same copy of the book, with no regard for their individual preferences and expectations. But with the help of AI, the publisher can now tailor the book to each reader’s unique tastes, creating a truly personalized experience.
By using the technology to gather information from readers (through questionnaires) before publishing a story, publishers can prompt the algorithm to personalize key aspects of the story based on each reader’s individual preferences.
This not only has the potential to attract more readers but could also shatter sales records, even surpassing the success of literary giants such as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. BuzzFeed is eager to explore this possibility and test the impact of personalized content on the media and publishing industry’s future.
